This issue marks our 14th anniversary as a publication. In years past, we’ve made a big hubbub about it, usually with a custom cover and some grand reflections, but this year seems like a good opportunity to just forge ahead, business as (un)usual. (Plus, in all honesty, dear readers, I’m a little spent after plunging deep into the bowels of Eyehategodland this past month).
I would, however, like to take a moment and express my gratitude, first to the New Orleans community for supporting us all these years. We do our best to put something in each issue for almost everybody, and I’d like to think our readership is one of the most diverse and engaged in the city. Some of y’all even reach out once in a while to give us an ‘atta girl, and we really appreciate it!
I’d also like to thank our advertisers, most of whom are small, local businesses. As I hope you know, we’re grateful for your support. Because of you, we are able to offer this magazine completely free of charge to the city (and beyond). So if you’re reading this and you like what we do, please take a minute and patronize these businesses. Grab a bite to eat, get a tattoo, pick up some “tobacco” supplies, go see a show, have a drink, or get something nice just for yourself.
Most of all, I’d like to thank the contributors, many of whom—but far from all—are pictured above. If anyone ever asks me for advice on how to run a publication, I would start with this: do it with a team. I am so grateful to the editors, writers, photographers, illustrators, and distro crew who come together for this Quixotic endeavor. Publishing a rag such as ours is a full contact sport sometimes, one which occasionally leaves more than a few egos bruised, including my own. But whatever the mood of the day, it’s always reassuring to know that I’m far from alone in creating each issue. Every month, I’m completely blown away and inspired by your talents. Here’s to hoping that even after 14 years, we’re only getting started.
