CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

Aren’t you tired of swiping in the hopes of running into a specific someone you have an existing, lingering curiosity about? Here’s your chance to be brave—to take the active route instead of the passive one. Let’s connect again. (Entries may be minimally edited for clarity.)

Metalhead at a Certain Mid-City Coffee Shop

To the metalhead at a certain Mid-City coffee shop: I don’t go there very often but when I do, you tend to be there. And every time I go, I get so nervous just looking at you. I’m utter crap at striking up conversations or not coming off as weird so every time you have taken my order, I’ve kept it short and simple. Otherwise, I’d unleash an interaction so cringeworthy that it’d make the milk curdle. Hopefully one day, if it’s not too late, I’ll be able to say more than my order, “Please” “Thank you” and that I like your pants. (Seriously, they’re really neat pants!)

Library Copy of Stone Butch Blues

I opened to the first page of my library borrowed copy of Stone Butch Blues, a book i have wanted to read for a long time and could not imagine reading it any other moment than right now. you left a post it note in the front for me, the next reader. i will leave a note for the next reader. and that is how we keep our history alive, keep love flowing! thank you, whoever you are. we are made of the same heart-stuff.

Modelo and Cheetos

You were buying a Modelo and Cheetos, when you turned around you said I was “super cute.” I replied that I thought you were too. Do something about it. Nice Friday the 13th tattoo.

Creepyfest Kindess

We met at the Parisite Creepyfest show, you and your friend gave me a drink from your personal supply. Y’all were coolness embodied but the heat and alcohol had me a little dazed and confused. Never even got your name, but I hope we will run into each other at another show. Stay cool!

Garbage Truck Hero

A sticky summer morning in Bayou St. John. A mother and her young son slipping under the tiny dregs of shade on the sidewalk. At the sight of the garbage truck floating down the road, the young son perked up. He perked up even harder and started jumping when the driver of the garbage truck honked his horn for the boy. Once to say, “Hello.” Twice to say, “I see you.” What a happy little neighborhood moment. So cute.
