It’s the end of July and we’ve just sent the annual Photo Issue to the printer, and are now in publishing purgatory, waiting for the copies to be delivered. So in these liminal space days, before we bid adieu to this month, I’d like to take a moment to express gratitude to the readers of ANTIGRAVITY and the various groups and communities who have really stepped up to help us out in our time of trouble.
It’s been an emotional month. Hopefully you saw senior editor Holly Devon’s July intro which described the magazine’s precarious future, what with times being a little tough around here—like they are with a lot of people and a lot of businesses right now. In June I brought it to the attention of the ANTIGRAVITY editorial staff that the trend was not looking good and we needed to do something about it. Holly, in all her eloquence, made that case public. That piece of writing has really sparked a fire and it’s been amazing to see the reaction.
I’m thankful for Holly and the AG editorial staff for having the foresight and courage to say we need help, because that’s not something I’m personally comfortable with. I like the magazine and all the work that goes into it to speak for itself. But sometimes that simply is not enough.
Many, many thanks to the r/NewOrleans Reddit community for picking up Holly’s intro, and a special shout-out to users canesfriessuck and moongooner for kicking off a massive thread with a link to our Big Cartel site, which has generated a lot of new subscribers and merch buyers. Advertisers—please take note of this energy!
I’d also like to thank fellow local media outlets Axios, Big Easy Magazine, and the Gambit for the coverage. The thing is, when you’re in the media, you really don’t want to be in the media. That’s usually a sign that something bad has happened. That’s not exactly the case here, thankfully.
One common theme is that there is a lot of desire to help out, and there are many ways to do this. We’ve tried to make it easy with a special page which breaks it all down.
And to everyone who has reached out to me and the editorial staff with offers of support and solidarity, we appreciate you. It’s been heartwarming to see the community come together for us—in a way that allows us to support you in return, which is what we always try to do every month, every issue.
Thank you again, truly. ANTIGRAVITY lives to fight another day.
