Residents of the Lower Ninth Ward attack a locomotive representing the proposed expansion and repurposement of the Alabo Street Wharf into a grain terminal by Sunrise Foods International and Port of New Orleans on February 26. The potential environmental threats to the neighborhood and surrounding areas include the accumulation of grain dust particulate matter that can cause respiratory illness, the attraction of pests (from rats to alligators), dust explosions that have the ability to release toxic gases into the air, and increased rail traffic and noise in close proximity to residents’ homes.
